Minnesota defeats the Twins 5-3 in a split squad game

Miguel Tejada drove in the go ahead run with a double down the line to right in the top of the eighth inning to lead the Minnesota Twins A squad to a 5-3 victory over the Minnesota B squad in a preseason split squad game at the Metrodome.

Matt Thornton (1-0) earned the win in relief of Josh Beckett who went 6.1 innings scattering 6 hits while striking out 5 including the last batter he faced DH Mike Sweeney.  Leo Nunez retired the four batters he faced to earn his first save (1) of the preseason.

In the losing effort Robinson Tejada gave up two runs on three hits in five innings of work.  Matt Guerrier retired all six batters he faced.  Mike Wuertz retired the first two batters he faced then couldn’t find his control and walked the next two batters.  After a meeting at the mound, he once again missed his location and Tejada ripped the game winning double.

Wuertz made another mistake in the 9th giving up a Homerun to Aramis Ramirez.  “I just couldn’t find my control today,” said Wuertz following the game.  “I’ll spend some extra time in the bullpen to work on my control that’s for sure.”

One thing that both squads showed was that they will be on the move.  The two teams combined for six stolen bases on seven attempts.  “It was tough behind the plate,” said Russell Martin the Twins starting catcher.  “When you have to think about those guys on the base path you call a different game,” he said “do I put down the sign for a breaking ball in the dirt or call another fastball?”

Twins Manager Carden liked the effort of his starting pitchers.  “Beckett gave up a string of hits in the 3rd inning but pitched out of it & Tejada had a rough first inning and was effective through five.  That’s all we really ask of our starters, get us five quality innings because our bullpen is lights out.”

The Minnesota bullpen is the strength of this team Guerrier (65/53), Burnett (55/77), Wuertz (33/74), Thornton (66/82), & Nunez (88/86) make up the Twins bullpen.  Guerrier, Nunez, and Thornton faced 13 batters and gave up no runs on two hits in 4 2/3 innings of relief.  Wuertz didn’t do so well giving up 4 hits and 3 walks in his 2 innings of work.

The Twins plan to play another split squad game today.
